Using a high specification hybrid polymer, the Everbuild Lumberjack 550 is an excellent adhesive for adhering all types of wooden flooring to most common substrates such as concrete, wood, metal, ceramic tiles, vinyl, marble, granite and other stone surfaces. As it is 100% active solvent and water free, it will not cause the wood to warp, swell or curl and as it is permanently flexible, it will allow the wood to move or breath without causing any damage.

It has excellent gap filling properties so is great for use on uneven floors or surfaces and due to the elasticity of the Lumberjack 550, it also has very good sound and acoustic properties. After laying new floors, they can be walked on or sanded after 24 hours and will be fully cured after 36-48 hours.

The Everbuild Lumberjack 550 is available in both the standard 310ml cartridge or the more economical 600ml sausage foil, designed for larger application. The 310ml cartridge will bond 1 metre square and the 600ml foil will bond 2 metres square, if applied as directed.

Einhell 4 Function SDS Hammer Drill and Chsiel

Often when using an SDS hammer for chiselling, you have to hold the tool in line with the material you are chiselling. This is often uncomfortable and not always easy to do. Would it not be easier to leave the hammer action on but allow the chuck to rotate to allow the chisel to follow the contours of the surface material without having to awkwardly twist and turn the machine to suit.

Line Trimmers and Brush Cutters

Now that the weather is starting to dry up and the sunshine is appearing for longer periods of time, it is time to get in to the garden and start to cut and trim back the lawn and borders. It is all well and good getting down on your knees with the grass shears but there are better and quicker ways of accomplishing these tasks. Bring on the Line Trimmers and Brush Cutters.

What is the difference between a Line Trimmer and a Brush Cutter I hear you ask? Quite simply it is down to the head attachment, a Line Trimmer has a thin nylon line that is distributed to a set length and the high speed of the head allows the line to cut through the long grass or weeds. The Brush Cutter uses a metal two or three arm blade and are capable of cutting through thicker weeds and overgrown areas.

When it comes to Line Trimmers and Brush Cutters, you have three choices, corded electric powered, cordless battery powered and petrol engine powered, all three have there advantages and disadvantages.

Lets start with the corded variety as these are usually the easiest and quickest to get started with. When it comes to mains powered Line Trimmers, simplicity is king. All these types of garden tools are powered by a lightweight electric motor and have a power cord which plugs in to the mains outlet. The mains powered electric models advantages include being lightweight, easy to maneuver and simple to operate. The main disadvantage though with mains powered garden tools is the length of power cord which limits the operating area.

Following on from the corded models are the battery powered Line Trimmers. These are usually powered by similar electric motors on the corded models but instead of a power cord, it has an on-board battery system. The main advantage of these models over the corded variety is the working area is not restricted by the length of cord. The disadvantages the battery powered models have is the added weight of the battery system and the longevity of the battery power. Unless you have spare batteries, you will have to wait around for the battery to charge back up to full strength.

Due to the low power output with electric motors, they are usually not powerful enough to power Brush Cutters as the blade require much more power to turn.

Finally we get to the petrol engine powered models. Due to the design of petrol engines, these are capable of generating far more power and therefore used in most Brush Cutters and Line Trimmers. As there are no power cords, they are not restricted to working within a confined areas and providing sufficient fuel is on hand, can be used all day long. With this amount of flexibly comes a price, weight, due to the design of petrol engines and the added on-board fuel tank, these tools are generally heavier than their electric cousins.

Following on from the our previous article on Power Tools Safety, today we will be covering the safety aspects of the tools themselves.

When it comes to using power tools, looking after them and taking care of them is just as important as the safety equipment needed when using them. It is so easy to cut through a power cable or to damage the plug and this could be disastrous. Every year, hundreds of people are electrocuted or even killed using power tools that have been damaged or badly worn. Taking just 1 minute to give the tool and power cable a good look over to identify any damage that may have occurred previously could just save your life.

PAT testing should also be carried out on all power tools on a yearly basis but this does not exclude the user from carrying out their own safety checks on a daily basis.

Power tools are commonly used on building sites and often at great heights on scaffolding. This itself is not particularly dangerous as the scaffolding has already been safety checked but imagine dropping a tool weighing 5 kgs from this height, it becomes a deadly weapon to those working below. More and more power tools these days come with an anchor points for attaching safety lanyards to to prevent drops or falls. For those tools that do not have anchor points, it is more important to ensure that when resting the tool down, it is placed in a manor that prevents it from being knocked over the edge.

A common mistake when using power tools is to put off a repair until a job is finished but this is often when accidents can occur. When using power tools, safety should always be one of the first things you should be aware of. These factors are commonly overlooked and as a result, accidents and injuries can often occur. These would so easily be avoided if the correct safety equipment was being used or worn.

The first and probably the most important safety item on this list would be the safety glasses. They come in various styles and shapes and even come with tinted lenses for outdoor use. Security Tamper Torx

We are often asked, What is a Security Tamper Torx and what is the difference between standard Torx and a Security Tamper Torx?

The standard Torx screwdriver or screwdriver bit is a 6 pointed star shape which is designed to fit into a torx head screw and unlike other screw heads, does not 'cam out'. Phillips and Pozi were designed to 'cam out' when the right amount of torque was reached but as machines have taken over a lot more of the assembly of products nowadays, there was a requirement for the driver bit to remain seated and let the machine control the torque. A Security Tamper Torx is still the same 6 pointed star shape but also has a small hole in the middle of the bit and a matching pin in the torx head of the screw. This prevents regular torx screwdrivers from being used and adds a level of security to the device or product.

Many products are assembled using torx fitting these days and when manufacturers wish to prevent the purchaser from attempting to tamper with or disassemble their products, they turn to the security tamper torx fittings as the torx drivers for these are not as readily available as other types.

Torx head sizes are measured from point to point and are given a number that corresponds to this measurement. They are shown with a 'T' and then a number 'T10' afterwards to denote there size. One of the most common sizes is the T10 but they are available from T1, which are used in electronics and computers all the way up to T100 for automotive and garage equipment.

The Bahco Insulation Saw has been designed and created due to the demand for a saw to cut polystyrene, styrofoam and mineral wool quickly and without mess. Due to the blades unique waveform design, it acts more like a knife and therefore makes cutting easier.

The blade on the Bahco Insulation Saw has a waveform amplitude of 0.5mm and wavelength of 15mm. The edge is sharpened and set 0.20 ± 0.05mm and the thickness is only 0.83mm.

When laying tiles one of the biggest problems most people face is ensuring that the finished floor surface is lippage-free. Vitrex have an answer for this and it is called the LASH, Level, Align, Space and Hold. The LASH is not just a Vitrex tile spacer, it is far more.

So what does the Vitrex LASH do and how does it work?

The LASH clip work in two dimensions, firstly they space tiles out evenly so that the same amount of grout is visible between each tile, secondly and more importantly, they sit under the base of the tile ensuring that they remain at the same height as the neighbouring tile.

This is all achieved by the patented LASH system. The clip is has two equal feet that sit under the tiles maintaining them at an even height. To ensure they stay level, a wedge is placed into the clip to keep it in place. The clip thickness means that the tiles sit evenly next to each other, keeping an even spacing. VDE screwdrivers are used throughout the world, but do you know what VDE means or stands for?

What does VDE mean?

To ensure that screwdrivers are safe to use when working with electricity, standards are set for testing screwdrivers and other hand tools and this standard is know as VDE. VDE takes its acronym from the company Verband der Elektrotechnik (Origionally - Association of German Electrical Enginners, now - Association for Electrical, Electronic &Information Technologies) in Germany who are responsible for testing and certifying tools and appliances.

The VDE standard is being recognised more and more these days especially in the light of health and safety regulations which are now everwhere in the building trade. Bahco have entered the market with their 466 range of box section spirit levels and after having the first sample arrive today, I can say now, I'm impressed. The sturdy box section spirit level is well designed, has an anodized finish for longer lasting protection and rubber end caps giving safety against damage from knocks and drops (they are drop tested to 2 metres).

The main face has been milled for improved accuracy and a 'V' groove runs the whole length of the level which allows for use on pipes, tubes or other curved surfaces. A laser marked measuring scale also features on one side allowing for use as a rule.

Bahco Axes and Hatches - I thought They Were The Same Thing

What is the difference between a hatchet and an axe I hear you ask?

A hatchet is lightweight axe with a shorter handle making them easier to use and carry. The head has a thin blade making for a finer cut which also makes it suitable for both outdoor and indoor tasks. Most hatchets heads fall in to the weight category of .6 to 1kg and have a handle length of around 360 - 500mm.

Hand axes are slightly longer and heavier than hatchets which makes them ideal for trimming trees and other general tasks. The head has a thin blade and together with a longer handle, the hand axe offers a longer swing and deeper cut. Hand axes heads usually weigh approx 1kg and have handle lengths of between 600 - 700mm.

Felling axes are heavier still and have a much larger handle. This combined with a heavy gives a much better swing and therefore a deeper cut. The felling axe is designed for cutting down trees or chopping up larger logs. The weight of the felling axe head is between 1.4 - 2.3kg and the shaft length ranges from 800mm to 900mm.

Splitting axes and mauls are similar in weight and length to the felling axes but with one main difference, the head. On a splitting axe, the head is wedge shaped and the back of the head is flat and hammer shaped, this is for knocking in splitting wedges. More often, the splitting axes have a straight shaft while felling axes have a shaped shaft.

Stanley Rotator Ratchet Socket Set

You have a nut or bolt to tighten/loosen and it is in the most awkward of places. You can barely get a ratchet and socket on to it but there is no room to swing the ratchet arm. The Stanley Rotator ratchet is the perfect tool for the job.

Instead of swinging the arm left and right to tighten or loosen the nut/bolt, with the Stanley Rotator, you simply twist the handle clockwise then anti-clockwise and this action translates to the socket on a 4-1 ratio (4 turns of the handle = 1 turn of the socket).

Not only is this easier to use in confined spaces, it also allows greater control of the tightness of the nut/bolt. The Stanley Rotator still works perfectly fine as a standard 1/4" ratchet and socket but the added twist makes it so much simpler to use.

Power Tools and Warranties

All power tools come with a warranty of some kind but it varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. Most trade power tools are designed to be used on site for hours at a time, 5 days a week and are designed and warranted for this type of operation whereas DIY power tools are only designed to be used for shorter periods of time.

When you calculate the overall usage of both types of power tools, the trade versions run for an average of 960 hours per year (4 hours per day x 5 days x 48 weeks) whereas the DIY tools only run for 144 hours per year (1 hour per x 3 days x 48 weeks). These figures are based on averages and it is appreciated that some DIY tools are used much more but then the daily use of trade power tools can often be much greater.

If you equate these numbers to the warranties, trade power tools often come with just 1 year warranty but this is valid for 960 hours of use while a DIY warranty can often be up to 3 years giving 432 hours of warranty. As you can see from these figures, a 1 year trade tool warranty is better than a DIY tool 3 year warranty.

In summary, when buying power tools, having a longer warranty is only part of the decision, price and quality also factor in and these have to be considered when making the purchase.

Lining Paper - The Big Cover-Up

Lining paper is being used more and more recently instead of wallpaper as it allows the home owner to change the wall colours without having to scrape off the old paper and the re-decorate.

Lining paper comes in a variety of different grades. Grades are the thickness of paper and the thicker the grade, the more they can cover. The grades of lining paper available range from 600 grade, suitable for newly plastered walls to 2000 grade lining paper for older, more damaged walls. The most common grade of lining paper chosen is the 1400 grade as it is a good middle choice.

The secret to hanging lining paper is choosing the correct grade and also good wall preparation. Most grades of lining paper will always be able to cover hairline cracks and small chips in the wall but can never cover over any lumps. This is were good wall preparation is essential, fill larger cracks or chips with filler, sand until level and then apply the lining paper.

Another useful tip for lining your walls is to use a solution of sugar water to wash the walls after sanding to remove any residue left by the sander then a apply a coating of PVA to seal the wall and give the paste a better surface to adhere to.

At the end of the day, spending an extra few hours sanding and preparing the wall before putting up the lining paper will always result in a better finish.

Power Tools - Trade or DIY?

Power tools come in a variety of different brands, qualities and prices. After checking on the internet today, I can find power tools from as little as £9.99 for a hammer drill up to over £500 for the same type of tool, albeit a better quality, more powerful tool.

What defines whether power tools are designed for the trade or DIY market? I believe that this is not as simple as it first sounds and their are more variables in this argument than initially though.

Firstly, the most important factor is reliability, trade power tools are used daily, for many hours at a time and therefore must continue to maintain their power and performance at all times.

Secondly, when power tools do break down, and they do, what warranty do the manufacturers offer and how quickly will the tools be back and running.

Thirdly, the price, when purchasing power tools, price is always a factor to consider, is it better to buy cheap and replace when broken or to spend more on a higher quality tool and and trust that it will last the distance.

When all these factors are taken into account, I ask the question again, trade or DIY? Some of the less expsensive manufacurers are now offering 2 or 3 year warranties on their power tools but does this mean that they are better power tools or are that they are only designed for the limited DIY use? An average DIY tool is used for maybe 4-6 hours a week giving a total of 208 - 312 hours usage per year and with a 3 year warranty, 624 - 936 hours use in total. A trade to is used 4-6 hours a day, 5 days a week giving a yearly usage of 1040-1560 hours. As you can see from these numbers, a 1 year warranty on trade power tools is by far better than a 3 year warranty on DIY power tools.

Often when working on site, there is no where safe to leave your power tools overnight or when they are not in use, and with the cost of replacing several power tools in one go can, the cost can be in the thousands.

Kitchen Worktop Router Jigs

Fitting a new kitchen worktop is easier than it looks providing you take your time, accurately measure and practice your cuts on an old piece of worktop first.

The old adage of 'measure twice, cut once' has never been more relevant than that of cutting and routing a new kitchen worktop.

When purchasing your new kitchen worktop, always add 300-400mm extra to the length required so that you can have a practice cut before mastering the final joint.

There are two main types of joint used when joining kitchen worktops, diagonal mitre joint, usually from corner to corner and butt joint, a straight cut from front to back.

The latter requires the use of a worktop router jig as a template for accurately cutting the joint. This is were the precise measuring and careful cutting must be put into practice. If when measuring the cut, you are 1mm out on one half of the cut, remember that you may also be 1mm out on the other cut leaving a 2mm gap where the worktops join.

When using your router cutter and guide bush, always make a practice cut on an old piece so that when making the final cut on your new worktop, you are aware of where the router cutter blade and guide bush are making the cut and which side to align the guide bush to for each of the cuts.

Ryobi is leading the market with a revolutionary new product, the world's first cordless drill with automatic gear shift. This means the tool will select the correct gear to suit the material that you are working with.

It is part of their One Plus system and uses the existing 1.7Ah batteries and charger or the newer 2.4Ah Lithium-Ion batteries.

Cordless power tools are based on their mains powered counterparts, they have similar abilities but lack one thing, continuous power. Over the years, power tool manufacturers have worked hard to design the perfect balance of power to battery ratio. The simple problem is, charging a battery quick enough to continue carry out the task in hand.

Batteries for power tools have come along way in the last few years, NiCd, NiHM and now Lithium Ion, all improving on the overall weight of the tools and how long the tool lasts in operation. The later, Lithium Ion, has greatly added to the success of the cordless power tools industry. With the weight of the battery reduced and a greater amp capacity, the Lithium powered tools are becoming more and more powerful with each passing year.

Battery powered tools are measured in two ways, volts and amps. The voltage is what provides the raw power (torque) for the tool and determines how powerful it can drill, cut or grind, the amps are what defines how long the power will last.
