Plumbing Tools - Monument BCM35 Copper Pipe Bender

When it comes to plumbing tools, one of the most commonly used tools is the pipe bender. Pipe benders come in a variety of different styles from hand benders to floor standing bending machines. Most pipe benders work in a similar way, the pipe is held in place by the dies, clamping block and forming die, the guide is then pulled around the pipe and forming die creating the bend.

Due to the recent recession, more and more imported cheap and poor quality plumbing tools are entering the UK market and this is making British made products appear to be more expensive than they really are. Monument Tools still manufacturer pipe benders here in the UK and are proud of the high build quality and performance they achieve. All the pipe benders for both copper and steel meet the EN and BS standards of quality required for plumbing tools in the UK.

The latest model from Monument is the BCM35 Copper Pipe Bender. It is capable of bending copper pipe in sizes 15mm, 22mm, 28mm and 35mm diameter. As standard, it is supplied with formers and guides for the 15, 22 and 28mm pipe but the optional 35mm former and guide kit can be purchased if required.

The formers have been precision machined and this gives them total accuracy when bending pipes. The BCM35 has an adjustable vice mount allowing for a range of vices to be used.

The Monument BCM35 Copper Pipe Bender is available to buy for just £440.50 including VAT.

Hand Tools

Hand tools are classed as tools that involve the use of hands to perform work on material or other tools to carry out a task or produce a piece of work. The variety of hand tools extend from screwdrivers to saws and from glass cutters to multi tools. The extent of these tools makes categorising them difficult as cordless power tools could also fall into this category as they are operated by hand.

Since the stone age, man has formed hand tools from simple bone, flint and stone. These early tools were effective then but have evolved over the years, adapted for different tasks and improved upon to produce better results.

In this modern age, we have more materials to make hand tools from than ever before, metals that stay sharper for longer, plastics that have the strength of metal and hammers that are lighter yet wield the same force as one twice the weight.

One of the more popular hand tools at present is the multi tool, a tools designed to carry out many different tasks. Usually they have a knife blade, pliers and a screwdriver, but many have a greater range and include snips, bottle and can openers, a saw blade and even a cork screw. These multi tools offer great functionality and are easily carried with you or kept handy in the toolbox.

Fluxaf Green Paint Stripper - Environmentally Friendly Stripping

If the EU gets it way and bans all paint strippers and graffiti removers that contain DCM, then there will be a shortfall in products for this market. One product that will fill this hole is the Fluxaf Green stripping agent manufactured by Fibre Multipurpose Products Ltd. it does not contain DCM, is environmentally friendly and is biologically degradable.

Fluxaf Green is suitable for removing paint or varnish from almost any surface and as it contains no acids, lye or hazardous solvents, paraffin or preservatives, is very safe to use.

Fluxaf Green can be used internally or externally and can be applied with a brush or roller. Due it viscosity and adhesive strength, it does not drip from ceilings or walls.

Event though it does not contain DCM, Fluxaf Green stripping agent is still as affective as previous paint strippers such as Nitromors but with the added advantage of being environmentally friendly.

Paint Strippers To Be Banned? - Nitromors No More

Paint strippers including Nitromors will soon be banned in Europe if the EU legislation gets their way. Due to a key ingredient used in many paint strippers and graffiti removers, DCM (Methylene Chloride), the European Union has put forward a a proposed legislation to ban DCM and therefore all products that contain it.

The European Commission have failed to properly research the technical requirements and experience of businesses that use paint strippers and removers, and of those in building care and conservation who rely on the services of such businesses. Virtually none have been consulted.

Currently over 90% of all paint strippers and graffiti removal products on the market today contain DCM and banning all of them would leave a rather large hole in the market.

Woodworking Tools

Woodworking tools have been used since mankind first walked the earth. The first spears were sharpened with flint tools and trees were carved out with hand made axes to make boats. We have moved on a little since these primitive tools and now produce carving and woodworking tools for practically any task desired.

More modern woodworking tools are made from hardened steel and stainless steel were once the were fashioned from copper or bronze. These newer materials keep their edge better and require less sharpening. They are precision made and machined to give a better finish.

The range of woodworking tools today extend from hand saws that can cut quicker than ever before due to cleverly designed teeth on the blade allowing cutting in both directions to chisels and carving tools which keep their edge far longer than ever before and can be sharpened down to the last inch of blade.

One of the most commonly used woodworking tools is the router which, when used with the worktop jig, is often used to cut out kitchen worktops and cupboard doors.

Lining Paper - The Big Cover-Up

Lining paper is being used more and more recently instead of wallpaper as it allows the home owner to change the wall colours without having to scrape off the old paper and the re-decorate.

Lining paper comes in a variety of different grades. Grades are the thickness of paper and the thicker the grade, the more they can cover. The grades of lining paper available range from 600 grade, suitable for newly plastered walls to 2000 grade lining paper for older, more damaged walls. The most common grade of lining paper chosen is the 1400 grade as it is a good middle choice.

The secret to hanging lining paper is choosing the correct grade and also good wall preparation. Most grades of lining paper will always be able to cover hairline cracks and small chips in the wall but can never cover over any lumps. This is were good wall preparation is essential, fill larger cracks or chips with filler, sand until level and then apply the lining paper.

Another useful tip for lining your walls is to use a solution of sugar water to wash the walls after sanding to remove any residue left by the sander then a apply a coating of PVA to seal the wall and give the paste a better surface to adhere to.

At the end of the day, spending an extra few hours sanding and preparing the wall before putting up the lining paper will always result in a better finish.

Along with standard lining paper, there are special papers designed for damp walls and when used with the correct adhesive, they will prevent water marks or stains from coming through newly decorated walls.
